Stud Services – Frequently Asked Questions
What is a drive-by stud service?
A drive-by stud service allows female alpaca to be brought to the stud male for mating and then taken home without staying on site. When managed correctly, this approach reduces stress for the animals and represents the lowest-risk option for maintaining good biosecurity.
All services are carried out on a welfare-led basis and subject to suitability and health checks.
Please note: Alpacas must not travel alone. If only one service is required a female companion should accompany her. Crias may travel with their dams.
What health and biosecurity requirements apply?
Biosecurity and disease surveillance are essential and are a shared responsibility.
Before any stud service:
- The Alpaca Biosecurity Checklist must be completed
- Females must be clinically healthy
- Any recent illness or disease exposure must be disclosed
Services may be refused or postponed if biosecurity requirements are not met.
Where will the mating take place?
All matings take place on our farm away from the main herd, in a securely penned concrete area that is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected beforehand, to support calm handling and strict biosecurity.
Disinfection is carried out using an approved disinfectant appropriate to the identified disease risks, in line with the biosecurity risk assessment.
How do I know if my female is ready for mating?
Alpaca mating can only proceed if the female is receptive at the time of service.
Owners are responsible for checking receptivity before travelling. A non-receptive female cannot be serviced, and mating will not go ahead if receptivity is not present on arrival.
If you are unsure how to assess receptivity, this should be discussed in advance.
What happens if my female is not receptive on arrival?
If a female is not receptive at the time of presentation, the stud service will not proceed.
This is a biological limitation rather than a discretionary decision. Responsibility for confirming receptivity rests with the owner prior to travel.
Can a service be refused on the day?
Yes. Stud services may be refused if:
- Biosecurity requirements are not met
- Health concerns are present on arrival e.g. low body condition score, evidence of mange mite.
- The female is not receptive
- Welfare or safety concerns arise
- Information provided is incomplete or inaccurate
Any decision to refuse service is made in the interests of animal welfare and herd health.
Is pregnancy guaranteed?
No. Pregnancy cannot be guaranteed.
Fertility is influenced by multiple factors, including timing, female condition and biological variability. While every reasonable effort is made, no liability is accepted for failed pregnancies.
Details of our re-service policy will be explained separately.
Please note: We do not recommend the use of ovulation stimulating hormone injections.
Why might spit masks be required?
Spit masks may be required for both the male and female as an additional biosecurity measure.
The decision to use spit masks is made by the stud holder based on a biosecurity risk assessment at the time of service and is intended to provide an extra layer of herd protection. Please ask us beforehand if you questions about this.
What must be completed in advance of the appointment?
Before attending the farm for a stud service appointment, the following must be completed:
- Submission of all required paperwork;
- Details for the female alpaca(s) being bred, including microchip or permanent identification, to allow identity confirmation on arrival
- Completed Alpaca Biosecurity Risk Assessment Checklist
- Payment of a deposit at the time of booking
Please Note: The balance of the stud fee must be paid in full prior to the mating taking place.
Stud services will not proceed until all pre-booking requirements have been met.
Please contact us with any questions you may have about suitability, timing or requirements before booking or travelling.
Is there a live cria guarantee with your stud services?
Is there a live cria guarantee with your stud services?
All stud services are sold with a 24-hour live cria guarantee.
If the female presented for service gives birth to a cria that does not survive beyond 24 hours after birth, the breeder will be entitled to one repeat service of the same female, using the same stud male, without charge, subject to the male’s availability.
The guarantee:
- applies only to the female originally presented for service
- is limited to one repeat service
- does not include transport, veterinary costs, or ancillary fees
- does not apply where loss is attributable to management, husbandry, biosecurity failures, or circumstances outside the stud owner’s control
All repeat services must be carried out in accordance with the stud owner’s current Terms & Conditions and health requirements.
