Buying Alpacas

Buying alpacas is an exciting step and the beginning of a genuinely rewarding journey. These intelligent, inquisitive animals bring enormous enjoyment to the people who keep them, and many owners quickly discover that alpacas become a much-loved and essential part of daily life.

At the same time, alpaca ownership is a long-term responsibility that deserves careful thought and good preparation. Choosing the right animals, understanding their needs, and setting up your herd correctly from the start makes all the difference to both alpaca welfare and owner enjoyment.

Unfortunately, many new owners purchase alpacas without the right advice or preparation, which can lead to avoidable challenges later on. Our aim is to ensure buyers feel confident, well-informed and properly supported before bringing alpacas home.

Whether you are completely new to alpacas or expanding an existing herd, we are always happy to discuss your plans and help you find the most suitable animals for your situation.

Thinking about alpaca ownership?

Alpacas are herd animals and thrive when kept in the right environment with appropriate management and support. Establishing a herd successfully requires suitable facilities, an understanding of their basic care needs, and a commitment to their long-term welfare.

Before purchasing alpacas, it’s worth considering whether you have:

•  Suitable grazing, secure fencing and appropriate shelter
•  Space to keep alpacas in compatible groups
•  Time to monitor their health and wellbeing throughout the year
•  Access to routine veterinary care and husbandry support

For those new to alpacas, gaining a basic understanding of alpaca care and management before bringing animals home is strongly recommended.

We are always happy to discuss your plans and help you decide whether alpaca ownership is the right fit for your situation.

Alpaca Power is part of the British Alpaca Society (BAS) Trusted Seller Scheme, a voluntary programme designed to promote transparent, responsible alpaca sales.

The scheme sets recognised standards for breeders and provides reassurance for buyers that alpacas are sold with appropriate documentation, guidance and aftercare.

As a Trusted Seller we commit to:

• Selling BAS registered alpacas with verified pedigree records
• Providing clear paperwork and a bill of sale
• Supplying relevant health and husbandry information
• Completing BAS ownership transfers promptly
• Offering appropriate guidance and support for new owners

The scheme helps ensure buyers can purchase alpacas with confidence, knowing that recognised welfare and transparency standards are being followed.

Buying alpacas from Alpaca Power

Buying alpacas usually begins with a conversation. We take time to understand your plans, experience, facilities and longer-term aspirations so we can help identify the most suitable alpacas for your situation.

For new owners, this often includes discussing herd structure, grazing requirements and the practical aspects of alpaca care before animals are selected. For existing owners, it may involve considering how new alpacas will integrate with the herd and support future breeding goals.

Once suitable alpacas have been identified, the process typically involves:

•  Discussing the health status, temperament and suitability of the alpacas selected
•  Ensuring appropriate biosecurity measures are in place to protect both herds
•  Agreeing the animals selected
•  A deposit to secure the alpacas
•  Preparation for transport or collection
•  Transfer of BAS registration and ownership (paid by us)

Throughout the process we are always happy to answer questions and provide guidance to help ensure alpacas settle well into their new home.

Training and Preparation

For those new to alpaca ownership, we encourage buyers to undertake appropriate theoretical and practical training before getting their alpacas home.

Training options and practical learning opportunities are available through our structured and tailored alpaca training programmes.
